OpenTRAP Showed Up Because Your Burp License Renewal Email Was Getting Weird
another week, another “free Burp alternative” claim. most of them are a half-finished Electron skin over curl. OpenTRAP is the one currently eating GitHub security trending charts: AGPL-3.0, Linux AppImage, proxy-first workspace, Repeater / Intruder / Collaborator / Sequencer / Decoder / Comparer, and crawl-and-audit powered by the OWASP ZAP engine. no license gate on the core toys. PortSwigger shareholders are fine. your procurement ticket might be finer.
what it actually is
per the project site (opentrap.github.io/opentrap) and the opentrap/opentrap GitHub repo:
- proxy-first suite: intercept, HTTP history, repeater, intruder, sequencer, decoder, comparer, out-of-band collaborator, full traffic logger
- scanner: crawl and audit via the OWASP ZAP engine, findings in an issue view with request/response evidence
- packaging: single self-contained Linux x86_64 AppImage (runtime + scan engine inside). optional in-app Chromium download for a pre-routed test browser
- license: GNU AGPL v3.0, no paid tier walling off Repeater
- scope today: Linux AppImage. if you live on macOS or Windows, you are not the first customer, you are a feature request
get it running (lab)
wget https://github.com/opentrap/opentrap/releases/latest/download/opentrap-x86_64.appimage
chmod +x opentrap-x86_64.appimage
./opentrap-x86_64.appimage
create or open a project at launch. drive crawl-and-audit through the wizard. use the bundled browser when you want certificate pain to be someone else’s problem. classic workflow: browse the target through the proxy, send interesting requests to Repeater, mark Intruder positions, drop a Collaborator payload when you need blind XSS / SSRF proof that is not vibes.
where it helps
- budget labs and nonprofits: ZAP was always free. OpenTRAP is betting that a Burp-shaped UX on ZAP’s engine gets more people to actually finish the scan.
- teaching: students can learn intercept-modify-replay without a license server drama mid-lab.
- quick triage: AppImage means “download and run” on a disposable Kali VM without inventing a Java classpath religion.
- collaborator habits: out-of-band proof baked in so junior testers stop calling DNS interactions “probably nothing.”
where you should stay sober
- engine honesty: scanning quality tracks ZAP. that is a feature and a limitation. Burp’s scanner and extension ecosystem did not evaporate.
- platform gap: Linux-only AppImage today. enterprise desktop standards that mandate Windows jump boxes will shrug.
- AGPL: if your employer has a panic response to copyleft, talk to counsel before you embed OpenTRAP in an internal product. using it as a tester tool is the common case; shipping it inside a SaaS is a different conversation.
- star charts lie: trending repos spike. evaluate release cadence, issue hygiene, and whether Collaborator callbacks still arrive next quarter.
sloth comparison chart (emotional edition)
- Burp Suite Pro: still the industry default. pays for itself if you bill clients. license UX is a personality test.
- OWASP ZAP alone: powerful, free, historically less “send to repeater in two clicks” for Burp refugees.
- OpenTRAP: Burp-shaped cockpit, ZAP engine, AGPL, Linux AppImage. interesting for labs, teaching, and teams that refuse another subscription.
- Caido / others: also in the “not Burp” aisle. pick based on workflow, not Twitter screenshots.
how we would actually use it this week
- disposable Kali VM, snapshot before install.
- scope a lab app you own (DVWA, Juice Shop, your staging box with written approval).
- browse with the bundled Chromium, build a site map, run a guided crawl-and-audit.
- manual verify every “critical” in Repeater. scanners lie. humans with proxies lie less.
- keep Burp Pro in the kit for client work that requires its ecosystem until OpenTRAP proves release discipline.
sloth take
Burp earned its throne. thrones attract alternatives. OpenTRAP is the rare one that ships a full proxy suite and admits the scanner is ZAP instead of inventing a marketing name for “we curl things.” try it in a lab. keep your permissions boring. and if your only objection is “but I already memorized Burp shortcuts,” congratulations on being the reason tools stagnate.
